Why vertical drama works: the format explained in four minutes

Vertical drama did not appear from nowhere. It borrowed the cliffhanger from the serial, the runtime from social video, and the framing from the phone in your hand.

The runtime is the writing constraint

A ninety-second episode has room for one turn. That is the whole craft: choose the turn, arrive at it fast, and end one beat before the audience is ready.

Vertical is not a cropped horizontal

Shot properly, the frame is built for two faces and a doorway. The moment you try to stage a wide establishing shot you have lost the format — and most of the shows that fail, fail exactly there.

The cliffhanger is a contract

Every episode owes you a reason to tap once more. Break that contract twice and the audience is gone, which is why the good shows front-load their reveals rather than hoarding them.
